The Smell of Ironed School Uniforms

Morning once smelled like steam and haste.

Somewhere near breakfast, uniforms got ironed.

The air changed for a minute - warm cloth, starch, urgency.

Shoes were missing, water bottles were open, somebody was shouting.

And still, there was a rhythm to it.

Chaos can be its own kind of tenderness.
